Odontogenic tumors are diverse groups of lesions derived from odontogenic tissues. Clinical behavior of these lesions varies widely, ranging from benign to malignant with differences in recurrence rate and growth pattern. Abetter understanding of the underlying molecular mechanisms will help to predict the course of odontogenic tumors and lead to the development of new therapeutic applications. Nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) are loops of DNA that codify the ribosomal RNA and are considered important for protein synthesis. The NORs stained histochemicaly by silver are named argyrophilic nucleolar organizer regions (AgNOR). Quantification of AgNOR represents a valuable parameter of cell kinetics and therefore cell proliferation. The number of AgNOR sites in malignant cells is significantly greater than those in their normal or benign counterparts. Proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) is a useful marker of cellular proliferation and DNA replication. Malignant tissue is characterized by an uncoordinated proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA).
The most prevalent malignant tumor of the head and neck region is squamous cell carcinoma. The bad prognosis and low survival rate are mainly related to oral cancer patients. Developing chemopreventive techniques has been crucial to reduce the incidence of oral cancer. Chemoprevention with natural products has emerged as viable preventive options. Salvia rosmarinus and Coriandrum sativum have been studied and discovered to have powerful anticancer properties. Aim of the study The present trial was proceeded to study the effects of salvia rosmarinus and coriandrum sativum during experimental hamster buccal pouch carcinoma induction; using PCNA as cancer proliferative cell marker. Material and Methods A total of 60 adult male hamsters were divided into 5 equal groups. Group I, biopsies of normal pouch mucosa were obtained as a negative control. All remaining groups were painted by DMBA as a carcinogenic agent. Group II, as a positive control group, was only painted by DMBA. Group III received topically salvia rosmarinus oil. Group IV received topically coriandrum sativum oil. Group V received both oils together. After 16, 24, and 32 weeks, 2 to 4 animals from every group had been sacrificed. Tissue lesions were prepared, and paraffin sections were stained with primary antibody for PCNA immunohistochemical evaluation. Results The salvia rosmarinus and coriandrum sativum; either alone or in combination, significantly reduced the carcinogenic effect for DMBA-induced oral carcinogenesis. AbstractBackground Basal cell nevus syndrome or Gorlin syndrome is a rare genetic autosomal dominant disorder associated with different neoplasms that may be aggressive with further aging so that earlier diagnosis of this syndrome is crucialAim of the study The aim of this study is to present different clinical pictures and diagnostic means to facilitate identification of patients affected by basal cell nevus bifid rib syndrome Subject and methods Seven patients presented with basal cell nevus syndrome were investigated through reporting medical and dental history, clinical and radiological examinations, histopathological investigations , routine laboratory investigations and referral to different specialties as dermatology , neurosurgery and orthopedics .Results All the patients presented with odontogenic keratocysts , bifid ribs, skin nevi, and skeletal disorders .. with three patients having family history affected by the same findings .Conclusionbasal cell nevus bifid rib syndrome has different clinical presentations and many specialists of different specialties as maxillofacial surgery, neurosurgery , dermatology and others must be aware of them ,also affected patients need frequent, follow up to avoid any complications associated with this syndrome ..
